I guess I should have gone back to the car then and there and located Officer Pedras, but I didn’t. For one thing, I didn’t know what the illegality of breeding lookalike horses might be. I mean, even if it were something super high-tech, like cloning, what sort of offense was that?

And also, I admit it, I wanted to see the house that was attached to all of this, the place that Marilee Hart was allegedly in charge of.

So I kept walking until I heard the sound of car doors slamming. Car doors slamming, followed by the sound of engines revving up.

My God.

They would see my car down at the end of the driveway. They would see the Fiesta, take the license-plate number down, and find out, with a little bribe — mordida, they say here — that it was rented out to Jeet and me. Well, to Jeet. He was the one who had his name on all our credit cards.

I might as well keep going now and check out the house as I’d planned. I mean, what was there to lose? But I crept up close enough to the drive to be able to see the cars as they passed me — which of course they’d have to do.

I did make sure I was out of sight myself, though.

My heart lurched. There was a flatbed truck, and on it the sorry red pickup truck that had been Felipe’s.

Then there was that Jaguar, with its low, curved, sexy lines.

Then something even fancier: a limo, black, a Bentley maybe. The windows were tinted, but they’d been rolled a good part of the way down so that I could see who was being driven inside.

It was Ernesto Quinto.

Somehow, I was not surprised.
